First bird flu infection in US commercial flock detected in Indiana

February 10, 2022 — The Jerusalem Post reports: “The first confirmed case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a US commercial flock since 2020 was detected in a turkey flock in Indiana on Wednesday, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

The flock was tested after about 100 birds died. The farm is under quarantine and birds on the property were euthanized.

The flock was infected with the H5N1 subtype, the same strain detected in mid-January in wild birds in North Carolina when the first cases of HPAI this season were detected in the States.

The first case of H5N1 in North America this season was detected in Newfoundland and Labrador in late December. Bird flu detected in more commercial flocks in US

February 16, 2022 — The Jerusalem Post reports: “Cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) were detected in domestic flocks in Virginia and Kentucky in the past week, as the bird flu continues to spread in North America and around the world, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

A backyard mixed-species flock in Fauquier County, Virginia confirmed an outbreak of the virus, while one flock in Kentucky was confirmed as having an outbreak and another flock was pending confirmation.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture reported that a ‘non-negative’ bird flu test result was obtained from a turkey flock in Webster County and that confirmation was pending. The affected premises have been quarantined and a 10-kilometer surveillance zone has been set up around them. Kentucky officials are working with their Tennessee counterparts, as the affected flock is located near the border between the two states…”

Two more human cases of H5N6 bird flu detected in China

January 31, 2022 — The Jerusalem Post reports: “Two more human cases of avian influenza A(H5N6) have been detected in China, the Center for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Department of Health announced on Thursday.

The first case is a 68-year-old man living in Langzhong who is in critical condition. The report did not state how he was infected with the virus.

The second case is a 55-year-old woman living in Hangzhou who had been exposed to slaughtered poultry. She is also in critical condition.

A spike in the number of human infections caused by the H5N6 subvariant of the bird flu has been recorded in the past year in China…”
