Behind “Naza”: Genocide Claims, Hamas, a Whitewashed Terrorist, and a Film No Israeli Has Actually Seen

“Naza” arrived at the Venice Film Festival on September 10 with a claim large enough to fill a headline: that the Israel Defense Forces has been running a policy of mass civilian killing in Gaza, executed with the help of artificial intelligence and accepted in advance rather than treated as an accident. The film’s directors, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, left Venice two days later with the Special Jury Prize and a standing ovation that ran nearly 25 minutes, the longest in the festival’s history. What they did not leave with was a film that could withstand scrutiny of either its messenger or its internal logic.
