59 years of abortion and over 11 million lives lost

Marking the 59th anniversary of the Abortion Act receiving Royal Assent, Right To Life UK has estimated that more than 11 million lives have been lost since the legalisation of abortion.

While the government does record and publish the number of abortions every year, figures for recent years have been subject to delay. The last full year for which abortion numbers have been published is 2023.

That year there were 278,740 abortions in England and Wales, a record high and a 10 per cent increase on 2022. Right To Life suggested that the significant rise was driven in part by the increased use of at home abortion services.
