North Korea’s Kim greets Chinese official, calls for stronger ties

April 16, 2018 — SpaceDaily.com reports: “North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally greeted a top Chinese official in Pyongyang and called for stronger ties with Beijing, state media from both countries said Sunday, as the traditional allies seek to heal battered relations.

Kim met Song Tao, head of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee’s international department, who was leading an art troupe to a spring festival in the North’s capital.

The delegation arrived just weeks after Kim made a surprise visit to Beijing and met Chinese President Xi Jinping, signalling an attempt by both leaders to shore up a key alliance ahead of a period of high-stakes diplomacy.

Kim is expected to hold summits with South Korean President Moon Jae-in this month and US President Donald Trump in the following weeks.

The North’s official KCNA news agency said Kim welcomed Song and his delegation in a meeting on Saturday at which Song conveyed Xi’s ‘warm greetings’.

The two exchanged ‘profound views on the important matters of mutual concern’ and the international situation, KCNA said, without providing details.

Beijing, Hanoi promise to keep peace in South China Sea

April 2, 2018 — SpaceDaily.com reports: “China and Vietnam vowed Sunday to keep the peace in the South China Sea, the resource-rich waterway that has long been a source of tension between Hanoi and its powerhouse communist neighbour.

China claims most of the disputed sea, which is believed to be rich in oil and gas reserves and is highly strategic for trade and defence.

Beijing has built up artificial islands capable of hosting military installations in recent years, stoking ire from claimants like Vietnam, which has emerged as China’s most vocal opponent in the waterway.

Foreign ministers from China and Vietnam vowed Sunday to address disputes peacefully.

‘Both sides should abide by the basic governing principles on resolving maritime issues. Both sides should not apply unilateral measures that would complicate the situation,’ China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters in Hanoi during an official visit to Vietnam.

Tehran, Beijing to boost nuclear cooperation

April 11, 2018 — Islamic Republic News Agency reports: “Energy cooperation between Iran and China is important, and the two countries are to boost ties in all areas including peaceful use of nuclear energy, Iran’s ambassador to Beijing said on Wednesday.

History of Tehran-Beijing ties goes back to over 2,500 years ago, Ali Asghar Khaji said at the Seminar on Iran-China Civil Nuclear Cooperation under the JCPOA which is underway in the Chinese capital.

Describing the seminar as important, Khaji said Silk Road newly known as ‘One Belt, One Road’ project has significant impact on boosting trade exchange between the two countries.

Referring to mutual dependence and common interests and threats which are the basis of today’s global relations, the ambassador said that Iran and China are cooperating to counter their common threats of terrorism and extremism.

As regional peace and stability are important for China, Iran as a country which is directly fighting terrorists in the region can play a leading role in ensuring trade security, the diplomat said.

About Tehran-Beijing commercial ties, Khaji said China has been Iran’s number one trade partner for a decade.

He went on to say that the two countries have witnessed a 20 percent increase in their trade exchange which stood at 37 billion dollars in 2017.

Iran, as one of the world’s richest countries in terms of oil and gas reserves and also as the most stable country in the Middle East region, can play a key role in providing energy for China and ensuring security of its transportation, the diplomat said.

Due to its strategic location, Iran can be a safe and short way for international trade exchanges, the ambassador said, adding Iran with its population of 80 million can be the best place for China to implement the ‘One Belt, One Road’ project and expand trade ties with the West…”
