Russian arms ‘to deter foreign intervention in Syria’

BBC News reports: “Russia says it will go ahead with deliveries of S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Syria, and that the arms will help deter foreign intervention.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the missiles were a ‘stabilising factor’ that could dissuade ‘some hotheads’ from entering the conflict.

Russia also criticised a decision by the EU not to renew an arms embargo on the Syrian opposition.

Mr. Ryabkov said the move would harm the prospects for a peace conference.

He said the contract for the S-300 missile systems had been signed several years ago.

‘We consider these supplies a stabilising factor and believe such steps will deter some hotheads from considering scenarios that would turn the conflict international with the involvement of outside forces,’ he was quoted as telling journalists.

Russia’s envoy to NATO, Aleksandr Grushko, said Moscow was acting ‘fully within the framework of international law’, in delivering the arms.

‘We are not doing anything that could change the situation in Syria,’ he said. ‘The arms that we supply are defensive weapons.’…” (President Obama, along with his hatred of Israel [Wall Street Journal], is intimidated by Russia’s warning to leave Syria alone or else all hell will break loose. Russian Official: Missile Systems Sale ‘A Message to America’

Israel National News reports: “Russia’s decision to send S-300 missile systems to Syria is, in part, a message to the United States, according to the head of the Russian parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Alexei Pushkov.

Russia opposes outside interference in Syria’s ongoing civil war, he explained, according to Walla. “We’re opposed to no-fly zones, because they are the first step toward aerial attack,” he said.

“Syria asked Russia to help it defend itself from aerial assault,” he added.

In early May at least two Syrian military targets were hit in what Syria has said were Israeli airstrikes.

According to the Wall Street Journal Russia has sent at least 12 warships to patrol near a Russian Navy base in Syria. According to the report, American and European leaders have widely interpreted the move as a warning to the West and to Israel not to interfere in Syria.

The reported deployment is one of the Russian Navy’s largest since the end of the Cold War…”

Moscow warns Jerusalem about attacking Syria

WND.com reports: “Russian President Vladimir Putin says he’s supplying the long-range anti-aircraft missile S-300 to Syria despite pleas from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry not to do so, according to a report in Joseph Farah’s G2 Bulletin.

Putin argued that the S-300 is a ‘defensive’ weapon and will help stabilize the region.

In June 2012, Syria was supposed to receive the S-300s but the contract was canceled due to Western political pressure. The announcement is intended to show Moscow’s support for al-Assad at all costs

Informed sources say that Russia intends to ship four batteries of the S-300s which have from 100 to 150 simultaneously deployable, guided anti-aircraft missiles.

Sources say that once deployed, they will be manned by Russian military ‘advisers,’ since the Syrians are not technically prepared to operate such advanced and complicated systems. They say Israel therefore could hurt Russians should there be more strikes…” (Quit your boasting Putin, it will fail.
